From our very first stumbling steps within the Volvo Group, PowerCell has always been aiming for manufacturing of our technology using mass production processes. We invested in and designed for high volume manufacturing techniques long before the fuel cell market could motivate such heavy investments in order to be ready when the time for commercial roll-out would come. That time is now, and we are prepared with a vast amount of experience on designing, operating and manufacturing stainless steel fuel cell stacks far exceeding that of any of our competitors.
Together in a strategic partnership with Robert Bosch GmbH we follow the only viable high-volume path to success: durable, high quality, high performance, high production speed, low material usage stainless steel bipolar plate fuel cell technology. This technology advantage is currently being leveraged in all our customers applications. Due to our commitment to high-performance stainless steel solutions our technology and products have left the tarmac and are flying, literally.
PowerCell has always been developing high performing and innovative fuel cell technology, it’s simply who we are and what we do. We recruit the best people and make sure they have the right prerequisites to excel. In the coming years the commercial roll-out of the low temperature fuel cell technology will generate investments throughout the fuel cell value chain which open new technical possibilities. In order to maintain our leading position and capitalize on technical advancements we work hard and invest heavily in new capabilities and increased core understanding. We are currently tailoring our technology toward our different customer segments ranging from marine and stationary to automotive and aviation.
Heritage from the automotive industry
Ever since the very first low temperature fuel cells that were put in operation in the 1960s’ space programs, all major fuel cell technology advancements have been prompted by the needs of the automotive industry. The tough automotive requirements with respect to performance and quality combined with the structured and ambitious cost engineering approach have shaped the technology to what it is today and continues to push the technology to and beyond the limits of the imaginable. As a Volvo spin-off this insight and this way of working will always be a part of our company’s DNA.
